the tradition
The yoga we offer our students is based on the profound teachings of Professor T. Krishnamacharya, one of the most influential yogis of the past century. During the one hundred years of his life, he inspired thousands of practitioners worldwide. Prominent teachers such as B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Indra Devi, and A.G. Mohan were all taught by this great master, and the lineage of his teachings continues to be passed on through one of his closest students for many years, his own son, T.K.V. Desikachar.  All of the teachers at Yoga Sanga have studied for years, and honor this tradition and its teachings by adhering to the principles of the lineage, including that yoga must be appropriate to each individual student.

With teachings rooted in the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali, Sri Krishnamacharya’s central principle was "Teach what is inside you, not as it applies to you, but as it applies to the other." He taught that yoga should always be adapted to the needs, circumstances and goals of each student; never should the student be forced to change to fit the yoga. This commitment to individualize the practice to fit each student, and refusal standardize the teaching methodology is based on the deepest respect for the individual.  At Yoga Sanga, the teachers respect and adhere to this philosophy and teach in a way that makes every class adaptable to the individuals who are present.
